Design at Branca
Marco Sousa Santos is founder and head of design at Branca.
A graduate in Product Design from the Faculty of Fine Arts in Lisbon, Marco Sousa Santos is a multifaceted designer working across various project and design management areas.
As a designer, he is a figurehead for the new generation of Portuguese designers whose international reputation has been steadily growing in recent years.
As the co-founder of Proto Design (1991) and Experimenta Design (1998), Marco was one of the leading figures in the new Portuguese Design movement which changed the face of design culture in Portugal. He instigated exhibitions and product collections with Portuguese and international designers, promoting a new generation of designers on the international circuit, well documented in magazines such as Domus, Interni and Intramuros.
His projects and products have been shown alongside some of the most prestigious international designers, in key institutions such as the V&A in London and the Milan Triennale and at major design events and fairs in many parts of the world.
He has collaborated with numerous companies, notably Vista Alegre, Temahome, Atlantis and TAP, in Portugal and Renault (Paris), Moroso, Tronconi and Magis internationally.
Marco Sousa Santos is professor of Product Design at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Lisbon, although his academic career has also taken him to ECAL in Lausanne and ESAD in Strasbourg, where he led a series of workshops between 2002 and 2004.
Currently the Lisbon-based designer uses this city as the inspirational basis for Branca, developing furniture collections in collaboration with many producers and manufacturers in the north of the country.
